Nothing contributes so much to tranquilize the mind as a steady purpose- a point on which the soul may fix its intellectual eye"(16).
This quote occurs in the first of Walton's letters to Mrs. Saville. He is nervous for his voyage to the North Pole but thinks that focusing on his task will help calm his mind. I can relate to this because recently my dog died and it was hard for me to get used to not having him around. I know its just a dog but he was always home whenever I got home. The couple days after he was gone I would go straight down to my room and start my homework. I found that focusing completely on my studies helped me temporarily forget what happened. Its true, if your mind is occupied is hard to think about anything else.
Nick, I'm glad you chose such a constructive outlet.
